Vehicle Scrap Trading FAQ

What's a fair price for a car sold for scrap based on weight versus its parts resale value?

Short answer: There's no single formula, but as a rule of thumb, a car sold whole for scrap weight is priced almost entirely on its steel content at current scrap rates, while the same car parted out — engine, transmission, catalytic converter, wheels, and any working components sold individually — commonly nets significantly more total, at the cost of the time and effort to dismantle and sell each piece separately.

Why weight-only pricing is the baseline, not the ceiling

A buyer offering a flat scrap price for an intact car is essentially pricing it as steel weight, with maybe a modest allowance for the engine and catalytic converter, because that’s the fastest, lowest-effort transaction for them — they’re not accounting for the individual resale value of your alternator, wheels, or working parts.

What parting out actually captures

Selling the catalytic converter, working engine and transmission, alloy wheels, battery, and any other functional or in-demand components separately, then scrapping the stripped shell, typically nets more combined than one flat “whole car” scrap offer — sometimes considerably more for a car with valuable parts.

When whole-car scrap makes more sense

If the car has little parts value — very old, heavily damaged, or a low-demand model — or if your time is worth more than the incremental gain from parting out, taking a single scrap-weight offer for the whole car is often the more practical choice.

How ScrapTrade Makes This Easier

Listing a car for scrap on ScrapTrade, or listing individual valuable parts separately if you choose to part it out, lets you compare real offers either way rather than accepting the first flat number from a single wrecker.
